This foundation degree is delivered and awarded by the Royal Veterinary College (University of London) with support from The College of Animal Welfare.

You will study veterinary nursing theory and complete clinical placements in veterinary practices throughout the course. Placements will be arranged for you, but you will need to organise and pay for your own travel to and from your placement. The course is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). After successfully completing the course, you can apply to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) in the UK.

Students on this course come from all different backgrounds and countries, but all share the common goal of wanting to succeed in the veterinary field and help contribute to animal welfare and health.

Throughout this three year FdSc degree programme you will develop both your practical understanding and your theoretical knowledge that you need for a successful career as a veterinary nurse. You will study the following units:

• Emergency, Critical Care Nursing and Anaesthesia

• Professional Practice

To successfully complete this degree you will be required to pass all assessments and examinations set by the University.

Entry requirements

Applications for this course are competitive. You will need to meet the academic and work experience requirements listed on the Royal Veterinary College website.

Work experience requirements

Before starting the course, you will need to complete:

• At least two weeks of work experience in a veterinary practice
• At least two weeks of work experience in other animal care environments, outside your home

This experience is important because it helps you understand the veterinary profession and the role of a veterinary nurse before you begin your training. After you apply, you may be asked to complete an additional application form with more information about your work experience.
