City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care Online Learning
Want to learn how to help ensure that animals in your care and content and well looked after? By taking this accredited course you can do just this. You will study online about areas such as health, welfare and behaviour at a time that suits you, allowing you to learn how to make a difference to the animals in your country.
Due to the highly practical nature of working with animals whilst studying this course you will need to complete at least 150 hours of work experience (a minimum of 4 hours per week) within an animal related environment. Whilst studying you will also be support by our expert tutors who have supported students from as far as Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Japan!
Location
With course materials being available at any time on our online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) you are able to study this qualification from your very own home!
Duration
This qualification is expected to take 12 months to complete and you are able to begin it at any time.
Entry Requirements
To be able to study this courses there are no set formal entry requirements. What we do require is a passion for animals, an up-to-date tetanus vaccination and good level of numeracy, literacy and ICT skills combined with a work placement.
This course is delivered in English and therefore you need to ensure you have sufficient English reading and writing skills.
You should either be employed, or have a voluntary work placement arranged, in a suitable animal care environment for at least 4 weeks before applying as you will need to complete a total of 150 hours of practical work (min 4 hours per week) in order to achieve the qualification.
It is necessary that you have access to a minimum of three animal species as part of your practical assessment. This must include dogs or cats and either small animals, exotics or large mammals.
You will also require a mentor, this is someone with 2 years minimum relevant experience within the industry or who has a relevant level 2 or above qualification. Your mentor will assess your practical assignment and therefore must also have a good level of written and spoken English.
Before applying for this course it is important to recognise that is physically demanding. Therefore, if you have any concerns about being able to complete the required practical work please discuss these with a medical advisor.
Content
Throughout this unique online course you will have the opportunity to develop a wide knowledge of skills which you can then use to make a difference to the animals in your care. The units you will study are as below:
- Unit 201 – Maintain animal health and welfare
- Unit 202 – Undertake practical animal feeding
- Unit 203 – Maintain animal accommodation
- Unit 204 – Undertake work related experience
- Unit 205 – Understand the principles of animal biology
- Unit 206 – Principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling
- Unit 210 – Introduction to animal breeds and grooming
You will complete written assignments which will be submitted by out online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). You practical assessments will take place in you work experience and be completed by your allocated mentor within the organisation.

Fees
The total cost for this course is £1,308.
This can be paid before beginning the course or it can be paid monthly via our ‘Pay As You Learn Scheme’. This is a fee of £109 per month until you are certificated.
In addition to the above fee you are also required to pay an Awarding Body Fee. This is £139.20* for City & Guilds registration and certification fees.
